toby hooper's 1974 slasher classic

the texas chainsaw massacre is one of

the most

groundbreaking and influential horror

movies ever produced

it was a simple subtle yet palpably

provocative plunge into america's dying

decayed wilderness

where a group of careless free-spirited

friends stumble

upon the home of a grotesque family of

cannibals known as the sawyers

where an even more harrowing

domineering

danger known as leatherface

butchers each of them one by one

when i originally covered it to back in

2017

i explored how both cemented and

subverted horror tropes and iconography

by showing us how danger doesnt just

stick to a nighttime schedule

and playing heavily into our imagination

by not showing us much of the grisly

violence

we've become so desensitized to seeing

while it wasn't the first of its time to

demonstrate raw gritty realism or

intellectualized the genre beyond merely.
