The story of the Flappy Bird
Thinking about things from my middle
school in early high school days as the
2010s are coming to a close I'm looking
back at trends from earlier in the
decade such as silly bands nyan cat the
horrendous Harlem shake a thing that's
Background
been vegan my interest as of late has
been early 2010 mobile games but most
specifically one game in particular I
present to you all
haunting ghost from your past and that
is the hit 2014 lowa sensation known as
flappy bird for the 0.1% of you who
don't remember this game the objective
of the game is to have the character
officially known as fabbi to move
continuously to the right for as long as
you can be avoiding pipes and tackling
with the laws of gravity simple enough
right whoa it's more challenging than it
looks and perhaps that's what made the
game so popular for the first year of
the apps short life the game was
shrouded in an essence of obscurity it
was released in May of 2013 and didn't
gain popularity until February of 2014
the reason for this is likely due to a
variety of factors but I've pinned it
down to three reasons for one the game
is competent it's short and simple andgets straight to the point
much like other successful mobile games
of the early to mid 2010 such as fruit
ninja and Angry Birds
the game isnt complex the game being
Controversy
free itself is also another factor for
its success alongside with the fact that
it was easily shareable sharing your
score and flappy bird back in 2014 it
was basically a way of declaring how
much better you were than the other guy
only man should get like six pipes while
you the true alpha male in the classroom
were able to get through twenty-one
hyperbole aside this game came out
during my freshman year of high school
and my fanon sweaty 40 old self bit into
the hype however instead of playing this
on my phone I used my iPad instead with
just me the overall experience extremely
pixelated anybody else do that the
controversy with flappy bird however
comes with a creator Don nuyen nuyen a
native of Vietnam found games such as
Angry Birds too complicated for mobile
devices he wanted to create a game in
which the player was always on the move
he had hoped to make at least a couple
hundred dollars when he released the
game but its first two months on the App
Store market revealed it to be a dud atfirst but then over a short period of
time
the game became viral with over 50
million downloads by March of 2014 and
revenue for nuyen exceeding over
$50,000
a day nuyen had achieved his objective
the newfound fame came at a high cost
at
the time not much was known about new
yet even today a lot about the guy
shrouded in mystery according to the
Rolling Stone aside from the occasional
Nintendo Kotaku even brought a
collective ad article titled flappy bird
is making $50,000 a day off ripped off
art accusing knew you know stealing the
pipes and designs from Super Mario now
can't flat-out say everything about
flappy bird is a ripoff but I can say
that the similarities are awfully
striking however it's obvious of the
game heavily borrowed from Moorish
designs so Kotaku pointing that out
didnt really add any new insight
whatsoever other claims of fraud on the
other hand seemed more credible may l
introduce you all a game released inthe name kick notice said similarities
between his Taito and flappy bird
he contacted nuyen and nuyen went on to
state he had no knowledge of pew pew
whatsoever but what if I told you that
the rabbit-hole goes deeper than that
and that people have suggested that pew
pew is actually a potential ripoff of
another game titled the helicopter game
look at this
Comparison
[Music]
okay it's nothing too exciting but it's
a note flash game so don't be too harsh
on it honestly I don't see how this
could have inspired PP you as the
controls are also different with the
player having to hold a button let go of
it in order to advance the helicoper
through various what are theyre
supposed to be floating great in towers
Imean it sure is a side scroller and
the gameplay is also somewhat similar
but I think this comparison is merely
coincidence but between pew pew and
flappy bird there has to be certainly
something about the similarities are too
great no matter what the case was nuyen
retain a successful game for at least a
month that is because nuyen started to
feel a sense of guilt on what his
creation had become letting me explainOn February 8th 2014 nuyen announced
or
Twitter that he would remove flappy bird
lam sorry flappy bird users twenty two
down i cannot take this anymore a lot of
people would kill to have such success
you ungrateful piece of scum you see the
success of flappy bird had taken a toll
on him in an interview with Forbes nuyen
sitted that flappy bird was designed to
play in a few minutes when you are
relaxed but it happened to become an
addictive product I think it has become
a problem to solve that problem it's
best to take down flappy bird it's gone
forever
Newton's consciousness meanwhile was
taken a dramatic toll on him and
affecting his sleep I can only imagine
all.
